What the merchant navy is

The merchant navy is the commercial shipping industry: container ships, oil tankers, bulk carriers and cruise ships that carry most of the world's trade. It is not the Indian Navy (defence). Officers work on ships for several months at a time, followed by leave at home.

Two main routes

RouteCourseRole
Deck (navigation)B.Sc Nautical Science (3 years) or Diploma in Nautical Science (1 year) followed by sea trainingNavigating officer, rising to Chief Officer and Captain (Master)
EngineB.Tech Marine Engineering (4 years) or graduate marine engineering programmes for mechanical engineersEngineer officer, rising to Chief Engineer

Courses must be approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping). The Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test (IMU CET) is the main entrance exam for many programmes; some institutes have their own tests and sponsorship programmes with shipping companies.

Eligibility basics

Be wary of agents promising guaranteed jobs at sea for large fees. Verify institute approval on the DG Shipping website.

Moving up requires sea time and passing DG Shipping competency exams. Many experienced officers later move ashore into ship management, marine surveying, port operations and maritime training.

Before you choose: a checklist

  1. Get a medical and eyesight check by a DG Shipping-approved doctor.
  2. Verify the institute's approval on the DG Shipping website.
  3. Ask about sponsorship and placement for sea training; finding the first ship is the hardest step.
  4. Talk to serving officers about the lifestyle.

Frequently asked questions

Is the merchant navy the same as the Indian Navy?

No. The merchant navy is commercial shipping; the Indian Navy is part of the armed forces.

Can I join with glasses?

Eyesight rules are strict and differ for deck and engine roles. Get a DG Shipping-approved medical check before choosing.

What is IMU CET?

The Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test, used for admission to IMU campuses and many affiliated maritime institutes.

Is there a job guarantee after the course?

No institute can genuinely guarantee a job. Sponsored programmes with shipping companies offer the clearest route to sea training.
