A dream career that needs a real plan
Flying a commercial aircraft is a dream for many students. India's airlines are growing fast and need pilots. But training is expensive and there are strict medical rules, so the right first step is not booking a flying school; it is checking eligibility and making a realistic plan.
The path to a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL)
- Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics. Students from other streams can sometimes clear these subjects through open schooling (NIOS).
- DGCA Class 2 medical, then Class 1 medical from a DGCA-approved examiner. Do this before paying for training.
- Ground exams conducted by DGCA: air navigation, meteorology, regulations, technical subjects and radio telephony.
- Flying training at a DGCA-approved flying training organisation in India or an approved school abroad, building the required flying hours (around 200 hours for CPL).
- Type rating on a specific aircraft (such as A320 or B737), often during or after selection by an airline.
Rules are set by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Check its website for current requirements.

Routes and costs
- Self-sponsored training at flying schools: total costs, including the type rating, often run to several tens of lakhs of rupees.
- Airline cadet programmes: airlines partner with flying schools and select cadets through tests; costs are still high but there is a clearer job pathway.
- Government institutes such as Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi (IGRUA) admit students through an entrance exam.
- Air Force flying branch through NDA or AFCAT, for those who want a defence career.
Education loans for pilot training are harder to get than for regular degrees. Plan finances carefully.
Is it right for you?
Pilots need calm decision-making, good spatial awareness, responsibility and the ability to keep studying throughout their careers. Speak to working pilots and a counsellor before committing such a large investment, and keep a backup degree in mind.
Frequently asked questions
Can a commerce or arts student become a pilot?
Yes, if they clear Physics and Mathematics at Class 12 level, for example through NIOS, and meet the medical standards.
Can I become a pilot with glasses?
Many pilots wear corrective lenses within DGCA limits. Only a DGCA medical can confirm your eligibility.
How long does pilot training take?
Typically 18 months to 2 years for CPL, depending on weather, school and your pace, plus time for type rating and selection.
