Interests grow with experience

You cannot know if you like something until you try it. Discovering interests is an active process.

Try, notice, reflect

  1. Try varied activities: clubs, projects, sports, arts.
  2. Notice when time flies.
  3. Write a weekly note on what you enjoyed.
  4. Talk to people about their work.
  5. Take an interest assessment.

A 30-day discovery challenge

Week 1: try two new activities (for example coding basics and a sketching video). Week 2: read about three careers you have never considered. Week 3: talk to two adults about their work. Week 4: reflect on what you enjoyed most and why, and take an interest assessment.

Interest vs ability

You may enjoy something you are not yet good at. That is normal; skill grows with practice. Equally, being good at something does not mean you will enjoy it for years. Look for areas where interest and ability overlap, or where interest is strong enough to build ability.

Interests and stream choice

Investigative interests often fit Science, enterprising and conventional interests fit Commerce, and artistic and social interests often fit Humanities, though many careers mix types. A Class 9–10 assessment turns interests into a stream fit score.

Turn interests into directions

Group your interests (building, helping, creating, analysing, leading, organising) and explore careers in those groups.
