Doctors for animals, and much more
Veterinarians treat pets and farm animals, but they also protect public health by controlling diseases that pass between animals and humans, ensure food safety in meat and dairy, support farmers' incomes and work in wildlife conservation. For students who love animals and biology, veterinary science is a full medical career with its own identity.

- Dairy and poultry industry: health management and production.
- Pharma and vaccines: animal health companies.
- Food safety and public health, wildlife and zoo veterinary work.
- Higher study and research: M.V.Sc and PhD.
Is it right for you?
Choose veterinary science if you enjoy biology, are comfortable handling animals (including large and sometimes difficult ones), and do not mind rural postings and hands-on work. It is not an "easy MBBS"; it is a demanding course with its own rewards.
A day in the life
A government veterinary officer in a rural area may start the day treating cattle at a dispensary, visit farms to vaccinate animals, advise farmers on feed and breeding, and handle government scheme paperwork in the afternoon. A small-animal vet in a city spends the day in a clinic: vaccinations, surgeries, dental care and consultations with pet owners. Both involve problem-solving, communication with owners and physical work.
How to prepare in school
- Treat NEET Biology seriously; it decides admission.
- Volunteer at an animal shelter or a local veterinary clinic during holidays to see the work closely.
- Read about animal husbandry and dairy schemes if you are from a farming region; it helps you understand local demand.
Frequently asked questions
Is NEET needed for veterinary admission?
For the all-India quota, yes, and most states also use NEET-UG. Check your state's current rules.
What is the salary of a veterinary doctor?
Government veterinary officers earn as per state pay scales; private practitioners' income depends on location and reputation.
Is B.V.Sc harder than MBBS?
It is a different course with its own difficulty. It covers many species, so students study a wide range of anatomy, medicine and surgery.
