Agriculture is a science career, not a fallback
Agriculture today is about soil science, plant breeding, drones, food processing, agri-business and climate-smart farming. India needs trained agricultural graduates in government departments, banks, seed and fertiliser companies, food processing units and start-ups. For students who enjoy biology, nature and practical work, it can be a rewarding and stable career.

How admissions work
- State quota: most states admit students to their agricultural universities through a state exam. In Maharashtra, admissions to agriculture and allied courses use MHT-CET scores; in Bihar, BCECE and university processes apply. Other states have their own exams.
- All-India quota: a share of seats in agricultural universities is filled at the national level by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), using national entrance scores. Check the current ICAR admission notice for which exam applies.
- Eligibility: usually Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Mathematics, or Agriculture, depending on the course and state.
Well-known agricultural universities include Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth (Rahuri), Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (Akola), Bihar Agricultural University (Sabour) and Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University (Pusa).
Jobs and further study
- Government: agriculture officers, extension officers and agricultural development officers in banks; state agriculture services; research posts.

Who should choose agriculture?
It suits students who enjoy biology and the outdoors, like practical fieldwork and want a career that improves rural lives. It is particularly relevant in regions like Nashik (grapes, onions), Jalgaon (bananas) and Bihar (cereals, makhana, litchi), where agriculture drives the local economy.
