Why teaching is worth considering
Teaching offers meaningful work, stable hours, government job opportunities and the chance to shape young lives. With new education policies, there is growing demand for trained teachers who can teach with activities, technology and care.
Routes into school teaching
| Route | After | Duration | Teaches |
|---|---|---|---|
| D.El.Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education) | Class 12 | 2 years | Primary classes |
| ITEP (Integrated Teacher Education Programme: B.A.B.Ed, B.Sc.B.Ed, B.Com.B.Ed) | Class 12 | 4 years | Middle and secondary school, depending on stage |
| B.Ed | Graduation | 2 years | Upper primary and secondary |
Teacher education institutions must be recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). The ITEP is NCTE's integrated programme, and admission has been through a national entrance test; check current notices.

Eligibility tests for jobs
- CTET (Central Teacher Eligibility Test) for central government schools and many others.
- State TETs (such as MAHA TET or BETET/BTET) for state government schools.
- State recruitment exams and selection processes after TET.
- For college and university teaching: a master's degree and UGC-NET (or state SET), and a PhD for many posts.
Skills good teachers build
- Clear explanation and patience.
- Classroom management and empathy.
- Use of digital tools and activity-based teaching.
- Continuous learning in their subject.
Career growth and specialisations
Teaching is not one job for life at the same level. Teachers can grow in many directions:
- Within schools: subject head, coordinator, vice-principal and principal.
- Special education: with additional qualifications recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India, teachers work with children who have learning disabilities, hearing or visual impairments.
- School counselling: with a psychology background, teachers can move into student guidance roles.
- Curriculum and content: textbook writing, assessment design and education technology companies.
- Teacher training: DIETs, SCERTs and teacher education colleges.
- Online teaching and coaching for board and entrance exams.
A teacher who keeps learning, especially digital tools and activity-based methods, stays in demand.

Frequently asked questions
Can I become a teacher after Class 12?

Is B.Ed compulsory for school teaching?
For most secondary-level teaching posts, a recognised teacher education qualification such as B.Ed is required, along with TET for government jobs.
Do private schools need TET?
