The confusion after a degree is normal
Many graduates feel more confused at 21 than they did at 16. The degree is done, friends are choosing different paths, and family wants a decision. The good news: this is a decision with many good answers. The aim is to pick the one that fits your strengths, interests and circumstances.
The main paths
| Path | Examples | Suits you if... |
|---|---|---|
| Job now | Campus placements, off-campus roles, internships converting to jobs | You want experience and income, and your degree has direct jobs |
| Master's degree | M.Sc, M.A., M.Com, M.Tech, MCA | You love your subject or need specialisation |
| MBA / management | CAT, CMAT, state CETs (such as MAH-CET), XAT | You enjoy people, business and leadership |
| Law | 3-year LLB after any degree | You like reasoning, reading and argument |
| Teaching | B.Ed, then TET/CTET; NET for college teaching | You enjoy explaining and working with young people |
| Government exams | UPSC, state PSCs, SSC, banking, railways | You value stability and can prepare consistently for a year or more |
| Skill route | Data analytics, digital marketing, design, cloud certifications | You want to switch fields quickly |

How to choose
- List your strengths from your degree, internships and hobbies.
- Check finances: can you afford two more years of study, or do you need to earn first? Many people work for a few years and then do an MBA or master's.
- Test the field: internships, short courses or conversations with people already in it.
- Set a time limit for government exam preparation, with a backup plan.
Our undergraduate career assessment includes a Career Readiness Index and professional skills analysis, followed by a counselling session.
Common mistakes
- Choosing an MBA only because friends are doing it.
- Spending many years on government exams without a backup.
- Ignoring skills: employers hire for what you can do, not only for degrees.
- Waiting for the "perfect" job instead of starting and learning.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to work before an MBA?
Work experience helps you choose a specialisation and is valued by many top business schools, but a good MBA straight after graduation can also work. Decide based on your goals and finances.
Can I change fields after graduation?
Yes. Many people move into management, law, teaching, data, design or civil services after a degree in another field.
