Healthcare runs on teams
For every doctor, a hospital needs physiotherapists, lab technologists, radiographers, optometrists, operation theatre technicians, dietitians and many others. These allied health professionals are in demand across India and abroad, and the courses are shorter and more affordable than MBBS.

How admission works
Admission rules vary by state and institution. Some states use NEET-UG scores for physiotherapy and other courses, some use state CETs, and many private colleges admit on Class 12 marks. Usually Physics, Chemistry and Biology are required. Check the rules in your state before Class 12 ends.
Who these careers suit
Students who enjoy biology, like helping people and prefer practical, hands-on work. Physiotherapy suits active, patient people; lab technology suits detail-oriented students who like precision; optometry suits those who like clinical work with technology.
Pay, growth and working abroad
Allied health careers start with modest salaries in many private hospitals, but growth comes with specialisation and experience:
- Physiotherapists can specialise in sports, orthopaedic, neuro, cardio-respiratory or paediatric physiotherapy, or run their own clinics.
- Lab and imaging technologists move into senior technologist, quality and application specialist roles with diagnostic companies.
- Optometrists work in eye hospitals, optical chains and with lens companies, or set up practices.
Several countries recruit Indian allied health professionals after they clear local licensing exams and language tests.
