What JoSAA is
The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) runs combined counselling for IITs, NITs, IIITs and other government-funded technical institutes, using JEE Advanced and JEE Main ranks.
The process
- Register and fill choices (institute and branch) in order of preference.
- Seats are allotted over several rounds.
- Accept the seat with "freeze", "float" or "slide" options as per rules.
- Report and verify documents.
Rank analysis, college list, form filling and round strategy after Class 12.
Choice-filling tips
- List many choices, from dream to safe.
- Use previous years' opening and closing ranks.
- Decide branch vs college priority honestly.
- Do not leave out choices you would accept.
Documents to keep ready
JEE scorecards and admit cards, Class 10 and 12 mark sheets, category certificates (if applicable) in the correct format, PwD certificate (if applicable), identity proof and photographs. Check the JoSAA business rules each year for exact formats.
Branch or institute first?
If you are passionate about a specific branch, prioritise branch across institutes. If you are unsure, a better institute with a broader branch can offer more opportunities through electives, minors and campus exposure. Your assessment results help clarify this choice.
After seat acceptance
Pay the seat acceptance fee within the deadline, upload documents correctly and respond to any queries. If you choose float or slide, keep checking results each round. Plan travel and hostel arrangements once your seat is final.
Common mistakes
Missing deadlines, filling too few choices, misunderstanding freeze/float/slide, and incomplete documents.
Frequently asked questions
What is freeze, float and slide?
Freeze accepts the seat; float allows upgrades to better institutes; slide allows better branches in the same institute.
