What AYUSH means

AYUSH stands for Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy. These are recognised systems of medicine in India with their own degrees, colleges, hospitals and government posts. For NEET-qualified students who do not get MBBS, or who are genuinely drawn to these systems, AYUSH courses are full professional medical degrees.

The courses

How admission works

Cut-offs for government AYUSH colleges are often much lower than for government MBBS, but competitive for the best colleges.

Careers

Choosing between AYUSH and other options

Choose an AYUSH course because you respect and want to practise that system, not only because MBBS was out of reach. Compare also BDS, physiotherapy, nursing and a drop year for MBBS. Our College Guidance Program helps NEET students compare these options with actual cut-off data.

Postgraduate study and specialisation

After graduation, AYUSH doctors can pursue MD or MS in their system (for example MD Ayurveda in Kayachikitsa or MS Ayurveda in Shalya Tantra) through the AYUSH postgraduate entrance exam (AIAPGET). Postgraduate qualification opens teaching, specialist practice and senior government posts. Some graduates also take public health, hospital management or research routes.

Questions to ask before choosing a college

  1. Is the college recognised and permitted for the current year by NCISM or NCH?
  2. Does it have an attached hospital with real patient flow for clinical training?
  3. What are the total fees, including hostel, for 5.5 years?
  4. What have recent graduates done after the course?

Frequently asked questions

Can BAMS doctors use the title "Dr."?

Yes, registered AYUSH practitioners use the title Doctor. The scope of practice is defined by law and regulators.

Is BAMS a good career?

For students interested in Ayurveda, yes. Income depends on practice, specialisation and location, as with any medical career.

What is AIAPGET?

The All India AYUSH Post Graduate Entrance Test, used for MD/MS admissions in AYUSH systems.
