Career counselling in simple words

Career counselling is a structured process that helps a person choose a suitable stream, course, career or next step. A trained counsellor uses assessments, information about education and jobs, and conversation to help the student understand themselves and their options, and then build a realistic plan.

It is different from advice. Relatives and friends usually suggest what worked for them. A counsellor starts with you: your interests, abilities, personality, values and circumstances.

What happens in a typical process

  1. Assessment: the student takes a psychometric test that measures interests, aptitude, personality and related areas.
  2. Report review: the counsellor studies the results before meeting.
  3. Discussion: a 1:1 session with the student, and often parents, to understand goals, worries and constraints.
  4. Exploring options: careers that fit, the courses and exams that lead to them, cost and duration.
  5. Action plan: a written plan with a main path, backups and a timeline.
  6. Follow-up: support during results, entrance exams or admissions.

What counselling can and cannot do

Counselling gives clarity, information and a plan. It reduces the risk of choosing a wrong path and helps families agree. It cannot guarantee admission or a job, and it cannot replace the student's own effort. A good counsellor is honest about both.

Frequently asked questions

Is career counselling only for confused students?

No. Even students with a clear goal benefit from checking fit, backups and the best route.

How long is a counselling session?

A typical 1:1 session lasts 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the stage and questions.

Can I do counselling online?

Yes. Online sessions work well and save travel time.

Do I need to take a test first?

It is strongly recommended, because the report gives the counsellor objective information.
