What RIASEC is

RIASEC is an interest model developed by psychologist John Holland. It groups work interests into six types. Most people are a mix, so results are shown as a three-letter code of your strongest types.

Reading your code

Your first letter matters most. A code like "ISA" suggests analytical work with people and some creativity, for example psychology or medicine. "ECS" suggests business, finance or management roles.

Matching codes to careers

Career databases list typical codes for occupations. For example, engineers are often "RI" or "IR", lawyers "ES", graphic designers "AE", teachers "SA", accountants "CE" and software developers "IC". You do not need an exact match; sharing the first one or two letters is usually a good sign of fit.

How to explore your code

  1. Write your three letters.
  2. List ten careers that share your first letter.
  3. Mark those that also share your second letter.
  4. Read about the daily work for your top five.
  5. Talk to one person who works in one of them.

RIASEC for different ages

For Class 6 to 8, interest types are still forming, so treat results as areas to explore. From Class 9 onwards, codes become more stable and useful for stream choice. In college, they help choose specialisations and job roles.

Interest is not the whole story

RIASEC shows what you like. Combine it with aptitude, personality and practical factors for a full picture. That is why complete assessments include all of these.

Frequently asked questions

Can my RIASEC code change?

It can shift with age and experience, especially in school years.

Is one type better than others?

No. Every type has valuable careers.

Does your test use RIASEC?

Yes, our interest section uses the RIASEC framework along with other measures.

What if my top two scores are equal?

That is common. Look for careers that combine both types, or explore both before deciding.
