MBBS Abroad: What to Check Before You Decide

Thinking of MBBS abroad? NEET requirements, NMC rules for foreign medical graduates, the licensing exam in India, real costs, language and safety: a checklist for families.

Why families consider MBBS abroad

Government MBBS seats in India are limited and private medical college fees can be very high. MBBS in countries such as Russia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, the Philippines or Bangladesh can look cheaper and easier to get into. For some students it works well. For others it ends in years of struggle to get a licence to practise in India. The difference is in the checking done before departure.

Rules every Indian student must know

India's National Medical Commission (NMC) sets the rules for Indian students who study medicine abroad and want to practise in India. Key points under the current regulations (always confirm on the NMC website):

A university that does not meet these conditions can leave you with a degree you cannot use in India.

A checklist before you pay any agent

  1. Is the university listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, and does the course meet current NMC rules?
  2. What is the total cost for six years, including hostel, food, travel, visa, insurance and coaching for the licensing exam?
  3. What language are clinical postings in? Patient interaction in the local language is often required.
  4. How many Indian graduates of this university passed the licensing exam in recent years?
  5. What happens in an emergency: political unrest, war or a pandemic? (Students returning from Ukraine in 2022 faced exactly this.)
  6. Is the agent's promise in writing, and is payment made to the university directly?

Frequently asked questions

Is MBBS abroad cheaper than private MBBS in India?

Tuition is often lower, but once living costs, travel and licensing-exam coaching are added the gap narrows. Compare the full six-year cost.

Do I need NEET for MBBS abroad?

Yes, under current NMC rules you must qualify NEET-UG to have a foreign medical degree recognised in India.

Can I do my internship in India after MBBS abroad?

Foreign medical graduates must clear the licensing exam and then complete the internship required by NMC in India. Rules have changed several times, so check the latest notices.
