Why the choice matters

A counsellor influences decisions that affect years of study and money. A good one brings clarity and honesty. A poor one can push you towards courses that benefit them, or give generic advice.

10 things to check

  1. Training or experience in career guidance or psychology.
  2. Uses a proper, age-appropriate assessment.
  3. Gives a written report you keep.
  4. Knows national exams and your state's admission process.
  5. Listens before advising.
  6. Is willing to say "this path may not suit you".
  7. Involves parents respectfully.
  8. Clear fee, no pressure to buy add-ons.
  9. Provides a written action plan.
  10. Offers follow-up at key moments.

Red flags

What a good first session feels like

You feel heard. The counsellor asks about your interests, worries and goals before giving advice, explains your report in simple words, discusses at least two or three options with pros and cons, and leaves you with a clear plan.

Comparing two counsellors

Ask both for a sample report, session length, cost and what follow-up is included. Prefer the one who explains clearly, respects your views and does not push extra products.

Questions to ask before booking

Frequently asked questions

Should a counsellor have a psychology degree?

Training in psychology or career guidance is valuable, along with up-to-date knowledge of education and careers.

Is a school counsellor enough?

School counsellors help a lot, but often have many students. A dedicated session can give more depth.

How many sessions are needed?

Usually one detailed session plus follow-up at decision points.

Do you provide a written plan?

Yes, every session ends with a written plan.
