Fashion is a business as well as an art
The fashion industry includes design, textiles, manufacturing, merchandising, retail, marketing and e-commerce. A designer's sketch becomes a product only with the help of technologists, merchandisers, buyers and marketers. So there are many fashion careers even for students who do not want to be designers.

Careers in fashion
- Fashion, textile and accessory designer.
- Merchandiser and buyer for brands and exporters.
- Fashion stylist, photographer or content creator.
- Production and quality manager in apparel manufacturing.
- Visual merchandiser and retail manager.
- Entrepreneur running your own label.
Do you have what it takes?
Fashion rewards creativity, observation of trends, colour sense, patience with detail and comfort with criticism. It also needs business sense. A career assessment can confirm creative and aesthetic aptitude, and a portfolio of sketches shows commitment.
Preparing for design entrance exams
Design entrances test creativity and thinking more than memorised facts. A good preparation routine:
- Sketch every day: people, objects, scenes from memory and observation.
- Practise creative thinking: design a new product, redesign an everyday object, tell a story through a poster.
- Observe: notice how people dress, what colours brands use, how shop windows are arranged.
- Practise general ability sections (English, reasoning, general knowledge) for written papers.
- Solve previous papers of NIFT, NID DAT and UCEED with a timer.
Start in Class 11 if you can. Last-minute preparation shows in the drawing tests.
Costs and choosing an institute
Fees vary widely, from government institutes to private design schools. Compare total fees, studio facilities, faculty, internship tie-ups with brands and the work of recent graduates. Ask whether the course is a recognised degree or only a diploma, especially if you may want a master's degree or a job abroad later.
Frequently asked questions
Can a science student do fashion design?
Yes. B.Des programmes accept students from any stream.
Is NIFT the only good option?
NIFT is the best known, but NID, IIT design programmes and several good private institutes also offer strong fashion and textile design courses.
Do I need to know stitching before joining?
No. Courses teach pattern making and garment construction from the basics. Interest in how clothes are made helps.
