What a counsellor discusses
- Your test results: interests, aptitude, personality.
- Your marks in each subject and how you felt studying them.
- Careers you are curious about and what they require.
- Practical factors: school options, coaching, budget, location.
- A backup if the main plan changes.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing Science only because marks are high.
- Choosing Commerce or Arts because "Science is hard", without checking interest.
- Deciding the career at 15 and refusing to explore.
- Ignoring diplomas and skill routes that suit hands-on learners.
A real example
Aman, Class 10 in Patna, scored highly in Maths and was told to take PCM. His assessment showed strong artistic and enterprising interests and good spatial ability. After counselling, he chose PCM with the plan of pursuing architecture or design, combining his maths strength with his creativity, rather than a generic engineering path.
When to start
Start in Class 9 or the first term of Class 10. This gives time to take an assessment, talk to people in different careers and settle the decision calmly before board exams.

Is it okay to choose Arts with good marks?
Yes. Humanities lead to excellent careers. Choose by interest and strengths, not marks.
Can I switch stream after Class 11 starts?
