Why CA remains a top commerce career
Chartered Accountancy, run by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), is one of India's most respected professional qualifications. CAs work in audit, taxation, corporate finance, consulting and their own practices. Fees are modest compared to many professional courses. The catch is difficulty: pass rates at each level are low, and success needs years of steady discipline.
The path step by step
| Level | When | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| CA Foundation | After Class 12 (registration can be done earlier, as per ICAI rules) | Accounting, business laws, quantitative aptitude, business economics |
| CA Intermediate | After clearing Foundation (graduates can enter directly if eligible) | Advanced accounting, corporate laws, tax, costing, audit, financial management |
| Practical training (articleship) | After Intermediate, as per current ICAI scheme | Work under a practising CA on real audits and tax work |
| CA Final | Towards the end of practical training | Financial reporting, advanced audit, direct and indirect tax, and electives |
ICAI revises its scheme from time to time. Check the current rules on the ICAI website for eligibility, duration of training and exam windows.

Who CA suits
CA suits students who:
- enjoy accounts and numbers, and are comfortable with detail;
- can study consistently for years, not just before exams;
- handle failure calmly and try again (many successful CAs did not clear every level on the first attempt);
- like rules, laws and logical reasoning.
If you love commerce but dislike long theory papers, look also at CMA, CS, CFA, actuarial science or a B.Com with specialised skills.
CA with or without a degree
Most students pursue a B.Com or BBA alongside CA, often through regular or distance mode, so that they have a degree if CA takes longer than planned. Choose a college with flexible attendance if you plan articleship alongside. A degree also helps for jobs, higher studies and government exams.
Is maths needed?
CA does not require Mathematics in Class 12, but Foundation includes quantitative aptitude (maths, statistics and logical reasoning). Students without maths can manage with practice. Read commerce with or without maths.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to become a CA?
With smooth progress, roughly four and a half to five years after Class 12, but many students take longer.
Can a science student do CA?
Yes. CA is open to students from any stream. Science students with maths often find quantitative aptitude easy but need to learn accounting from scratch.
What is the salary of a CA?
Starting pay varies widely by firm, city and rank. Strong performers in large firms and companies earn well, and experienced CAs can earn much more.
