Biology meets technology

Biotechnology uses living cells and biological processes to make useful products: vaccines, medicines, diagnostic kits, enzymes for industry, better crops and biofuels. India has a large vaccine and biopharma industry, and the field grew rapidly during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Careers and the importance of higher study

Entry-level jobs after a bachelor's degree include quality control, lab technician, production and sales roles in pharma and diagnostics. Many of the better roles in research, R&D and specialised industry ask for an M.Sc or M.Tech, and research careers need a PhD. Exams such as IIT JAM, GAT-B and GATE lead to good postgraduate programmes.

Interdisciplinary skills such as bioinformatics, data analysis and regulatory affairs make biotechnologists far more employable.

Who it suits

Students who enjoy biology and chemistry practicals, are curious about how life works and are willing to study beyond a bachelor's degree. If you want quick employment after three years, discuss carefully with a counsellor first.

Where biotechnologists work

SectorExample roles
Vaccines and biopharmaProduction executive, quality control analyst, process development
DiagnosticsLab scientist, assay developer, application specialist
Agriculture biotechPlant tissue culture, seed technology, crop improvement
Food and industrial biotechFermentation, enzyme production, quality assurance
ResearchJunior research fellow in government institutes and universities
Clinical research and regulatoryClinical research associate, regulatory affairs executive

Cities with strong biotech clusters include Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and the Delhi region.

How to make your degree count

  1. Choose a college with working labs and research-active faculty.
  2. Do summer internships in labs or companies from the second year.
  3. Learn basic programming and statistics (R or Python) for bioinformatics and data roles.
  4. Prepare early for IIT JAM, GAT-B or GATE if you plan a master's.
  5. Read scientific news and a few research papers in your area of interest.

Frequently asked questions

Is biotechnology a good option without NEET?

Yes, it is one of the strongest biology-based options without MBBS, especially if you plan a master's degree.

Can a PCM student do biotechnology?

For B.Tech in many states, yes. B.Sc biotechnology usually needs biology.

What is the salary after B.Sc biotechnology?

Entry-level salaries after a bachelor's degree are modest; pay improves substantially with a master's degree, specialised skills and experience.
